The civic budget may be realistic, as it didn’t put an extra burden of taxes on the common man. However, it will not help the saffron alliance in the upcoming civic elections as the new commissioner has aborted many ambitious projects suggested by Shiv Sena leaders.

The civic budget is realistic and result oriented. Last year the chairman of the Standing Committee had proposed a wax museum, like Madame Tussaud’s, in Mumbai. The project didn’t even get mentioned in the budget.

Standing committee chairman Ravindra Waikar also recommended a Mumbai Eye based on the London Eye. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray too proposed a bird park at Powai Garden. Both these projects were omitted. In the upcoming elections there aren’t major issues to take credit of. All the water projects won’t be completed within this financial year.

Work on the new tunnels, Powai to Veravali and Powai to Ghatkopar, will start on October 2011 and end by September 2015. Another tunnel proposed in the budget is Gundavali to Bhandup, to be completed by December 2014.

The two major water projects-— Gargai and Pinjal will start in March and October of 2014 and end by June 2017 and March 2021 respectively. They will not benefit the ruling political party in upcoming elections. “There’s no tax hike or new taxes. If the administration tries to impose it in the future, we will oppose it,” said Rahul Shewale the chairman of the Standing Committee.

“It’s true that we can’t say that we proposed a great amount of work, but we can say that we have completed the ongoing projects that were vital to the city.” said Ashish Shelar a BJP group leader in the BMC. He added, “There is huge provision of Rs. 887 crores for the Middle Vaitarana Mumbai IV- Project, which is going to be completed soon.”
