Around 300 undergraduate students of Bombay VET College at Goregaon protested against the college authorities for inadequate infrastructure and lack of facilities by refusing to attend lectures on Saturday and even on Monday.

The students demanded that they be shifted to the Parel campus,  “which is well equipped” as it is attached to Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals.

“In Goregaon, we have a small clinic where we get a few cases. But, the PG students in the Parel campus get to work on interesting cases as it is attached to the hospital,” claimed a fourth-year student. “Also, there is not enough accommodation in the hostels. The girls hostel is only one floor and the boys have a three-storey hostel. The toilets are also in a bad condition and there are leakages.”

Earlier the college, had provisions of two years in Goregaon campus and three years in Parel. But, after it was recognised by the Veterinary Council of India in 2009, the undergraduate students were shifted to Goregaon.

“According to norms, undergraduate colleges should have a uni campus on 100 acres of land. We had to shift the students to the Goregaon campus as we did not have more than 80 acres of land in Parel,” said Dr Ashish Paturkar, associate dean.  “The students have complained to us earlier and we have developed the campus as well.  A few improvements are yet to be done. We have applied for funds and require time.”
