The Bombay High Court has directed the Commissioner of Disability to send an officer to Pune to visit 78-year-old, bed-ridden Lila Parulekar, who has allegedly been put under house arrest. Lila is the daughter of Nanasaheb Parulekar, the founder of a Marathi daily in which she owns 41.57 per cent shares.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Roshan Dalvi gave the directive as Lila was suffering from multiple disabilities and diseases, and was living in unhygienic condition in her Pune bungalow.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Pronoti Vyas, a social activist and food technologist from Satara, seeking that Lila be provided medical treatment.

Jamshed Mistry and Pradip Havnur, counsels for Vyas, argued that Lila has been in house arrest by the company which is not allowing anyone to meet her.

“She is suffering from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and does not remember much. However, people come and take her signature on documents and cheques,” Mistry told the court, adding that she needed immediate medical attention.

Lila is also holding 7-acre landed property at Mahabaleshwar in Satara district. Apart from that she owns 3.5 acres at her present home and around one acre at Baner in Pune. Landed properties apart, she has a considerable bank balance and other investments that she inherited from her father and also the compensation that she got from the company.

Vyas has prayed that Lila’s share in the company and her other assets and investments be secured. The petitioner has also sought a special assessment team to examine the mental and physical health of Lila.

Lila, who was an animal rights activist, had given shelter to over 200 animals, including some stray dogs, in her bungalow. Owing to ill health, she was not able to take care of them.

Vyas’ petition prays that other animal welfare activists be allowed to take care of the animals.
