Taking note of the over “eight and a half year’’ delay, the Bombay high court on Thursday said it hopes the trial in the Mulund, Vile Parle and Mumbai Central serial bomb blasts cases will expeditiously conclude.

A division bench of justices PV Hardas and MN Gilani was hearing a hand-written application filed in February 2011 by an accused Farhan Khot urging direction for speedy trial. He said since his arrest in 2004, he has been languishing in prison. A chargesheet was filed in 2004. Khot and 18 accused are facing trial under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).

Additional public prosecutor Jayesh Yagnik submitted that special court granted Khot bail on April 1, 2011. He said that the trial began only last year after the Supreme Court lifted the stay in September 2010 and is likely to conclude shortly. He said prosecution has examined 18 witnesses and four police officers, including the investigating officer, remain to be examined.

The judges declined Khot’s plea for a day to day hearing observing that the trial is near completion. “We, however, hope the trial will be completed as expeditiously as possible,” said Justice Hardas. The judges disposed of Khot’s application taking on record the statement that Khot has been released on bail.

The prosecution also clubbed along the cases of blasts at Mumbai Central on December 6, 2002 and blast at Vile Parle station on January 27, 2003.
