Troubles are not over for actor John Abraham who had gotten away with only a light fine in the 2006 rash and negligent driving case.

The Bombay high court on Monday said it was considering increasing the fine amount imposed on the actor by the trial court, which was also upheld by the sessions court.

Justice RC Chavan was hearing an appeal filed by Abraham challenging his 15-day jail sentence by the sessions court.

“I may increase the fine amount imposed on the applicant (Abraham) or compensation for the victims,” said justice Chavan. The lower court had slapped a fine of Rs1,000 for rash and negligent driving and Rs500 for injuring the two.

In the last hearing, the court asked Abraham to add the two injured, Shyam Kasbe and Tanmay Majhi, as respondents in the appeal. On Monday, Ashok Mundargi, counsel for Abraham, told the HC that Majhi has been added in the appeal. Kasbe died due to an illness during trial. Directing the police to trace Kasbe’s legal representatives, Justice Chavan said: “So what if he is dead, his family can get the compensation.”

On April 8, 2006, Abraham’s Yamaha Hayabusa crashed into a bicycle on Carter Road, injuring the two. On October 14, 2010, the metropolitan magistrate court at Bandra convicted Abraham under section 279 (rash driving) and sentenced him to 15 days’ jail and a fine of Rs1,000. He was found guilty under section 337 (causing hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others). On March 9, the sessions court upheld the trial court’s sentence and rejected his bail plea. Abraham rushed to HC which released him on bail after he paid Rs20,000 and suspended his sentence. The HC has kept the appeal for hearing on April 9.
