The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the crime branch has registered an FIR in the sensational bomb suit procurement scam case against supplier Bimal Agarwal and two others.

The EOW had recently received an application from the office of the state Director General of Police (DGP) regarding this. Besides Agarwal, an IPS officer is likely to be questioned in the case.

“We have received an application from the DGP office and filed the FIR at the Colaba police station,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime).

Following the 26/11 attacks, the police had placed an order for 82 bomb suits to Agarwal’s company. Though the police did not receive a single suit till date, a payment of Rs6.25 crore was made by the DGP office to Agarwal on March 31, 2009.

According to sources in the DGP office, there are about 16 persons named as accused in the case. Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Bureau had investigated the matter and had submitted their report to the DGP office.

“We would be investigating as to how the payment was made though the bomb suits were not procured. The role of every person named in the case would be investigated. An IPS officer who was in-charge of the procurements at the DGP office is also one of the accused,” said an EOW official.

“We had asked for US-manufactured suits and had asked for the inspection of the suits, but the firm was reluctant to let their products being inspected. We suspected the suits to be of Chinese make,” said a home department official.
