The year 2009 was one of the worst for our movie makers with a mere 8% success rate, and losses exceeding Rs400 crore.
Towards the end of the year, the industry pinned its hopes on Kurbaan, De Dana Dan and Rocket Singh, which fell flat on the box office. But as they say, there is light at the end of the tunnel. And the light is coming from Three Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, also known in the industry as the man with the Midas touch.
Shyam Shroff, a prominent exhibitor and distributor, who saw Three Idiots at a preview earlier this week, says it is the “best film of 2009”.
Ramesh Taurani, who produced a hit, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani, in 2009, says, “It looks like that Three Idiots has got all the ingredients of a blockbuster.”
Taurani says that the success of the movie will cheer up the industry that has found fewer reasons to smile this year.
According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the movie is likely to act as a great confidence-booster for an industry. “We started 2009 with a disaster, Chandni Chowk to China. It’s only right that we end it with a film as good as Three Idiots,” Adarsh says.
Filmmaker Vipul Shah states, “It’s true that hope needs to come back to the industry, which is going through a rough patch, and it looks like this film will help bring back that hope.”
Devang Sampat of the Cinemax cinemas, who saw the film at a special screening for multiplexes, says the film could be one of the biggest hits of all time.
“We are hoping to make a killing on the film. The advanced booking looks very promising. While a big film sells about 3,000-4,000 tickets in advance, we have already sold 12,000 tickets of Three Idiots,” says Sampat.
