In the backdrop of July 13, 2011 serial blasts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to train personnel to provide basic first aid to victims in case such incidents occur in future. Sessions for the course for training personnel - to be called ‘first responders’ - are expected to begin from second or third week of the on-going month.

“We felt the need to have such personnel in the backdrop of explosions occurred last year. Those who came to fore to help blasts victims last year, did not know how to provide first aid, how to lift an injured and move them to hospitals. Hence, to better response, we have decided to impart training,” additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said.

Mhaiskar added apart from basic aid, the personnel are also likely to be imparted knowledge of other treatments, details of which are being worked out, too. “Some of the details are still being worked out. To begin with we plan to train 30 candidates, who will be enrolled on first come first serve basis,” she added.
Interested ones with age more than 18 can apply for the course.

The sessions for the course will be held across 33 fire stations on Sundays. The courses will be conducted in co-ordination with disaster management cell, health department apart from the fire brigade. “People pursuing intensive courses will be issued certificates by us,” she added.

The previous year blasts had claimed 26 lives and left 130 injured in three explosions at Zaveri Bazaar, Opera House and Dadar over a short span of time of 12 minutes.

“The idea floated by the civic body can be welcomed one, but it should keep on train more number of people. Having people trained in such a manner at local level will increase the response time,” a resident said reacting to the idea.
