The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to start a drive to raze illegal slaughterhouses in the city so that the Deonar abattoir can be used to its fullest capacity.
According to the civic body, the abattoir has an “unutilised consumption” of 60% because of illegal slaughterhouses that have come up in the city. “If the Deonar abattoir is used to its fullest capacity, its production can go up by 50-60%, which is its unutilised consumption. We are in the process of studying aspects that can help increase its productivity. At the same time, the BMC will undertake a special drive to stop illegal slaughtering in the city,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner.
Standing committee member Sameer Desai, who raised the issue in the committee’s meeting, said that illegal slaughterhouses are coming up because the city’s needs cannot be fulfilled by the Deonar abattoir alone.
“Do we have a detailed report on the exact consumption of meat in the city? The administration should have such a report. An announcement about razing illegal slaughterhouses has been made many times, but there was no action,” he said.
