Despite its own roads in bad shape, the civic body is now going to teach lessons on road repairs to authorities in Rajasthan. The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) under the state’s department of urban development and housing approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to teach them a lesson or two on road improvement.

JDA issued a letter to the civic body in May to demonstrate them the technology on improving the road infrastructure. After which two senior officials from the department visited the city to present the techniques implemented by the civic body.

“The Jaipur Development Authority was impressed by the way the BMC has been working towards roads construction and improvement. They wanted us to demonstrate the skills deployed by us and help them eradicate the bottlenecks faced by them,” said Sanjay Badve, chief engineer roads department.

The key emphasis of the presentation was on managing underground utilities. At the same time material used for laying down of the road figured prominently in the meeting’s agenda.

The city is largely seems to be facing tough time on maintaining the underground utilities and repeated excavations on roads and formation of trenches, said a senior civic official who made the presentation.

“The authorities from Rajasthan were explained of the duct policy which has been implemented across the city. They were told how BMC has been able to get rid of the trenches effectively by having one common underground ducts to manage utilities underneath,” added the official.

The meeting in Jaipur was attended by various municipal corporation chiefs of the state and collectors. The irony is the city roads are itself plagued with trenches. Around 310 km of stretch of roads in the city had been excavated by underground utilities.

Several agencies like telecom operators, BEST and gas companies have dug roads in the city to lay down the respective utilities. In a bid to accommodate optical fibers like telephone lines, gas supply lines, cable lines and electricity wires roads are excavated.

Meanwhile, the civic body has been facing citizens’ wrath on potholes. Yet the department claims to fix roads pockmarked roads. It claims to fill potholes on over 3093 locations in the city.
