Be ready to pay more for some commodities as the municipal corporation has proposed a hike in licence fee for businesses and stocking of various goods.

The proposal has sought 75% hike in fees. If cleared, you will have to pay more for certain commodities.

On Monday, the municipal administration tabled the proposal before Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) law and revenue committee, seeking a hike in charges under sections 393,394 and 412A of Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act, 1888. The members of the committee have sought time to contemplate on the recommendations in the proposal.

“We have suggested a hike in fees as licence charges for businesses and stocking commodities within the BMC limits because it has not changed for the past six years. Given the changing times, there is a need to increase rates,” a senior civic official said, requesting not to be named.

He added that if the proposal comes through, it would add Rs18 crore to the BMC coffers in a fiscal.

The corporation has planned to hike fees for business and stocking of scores of commodities amongst which figure explosive items such as fire crackers, kerosene, match box, dry coconut, fat, butter, ghee, petroleum jelly, sweet, peach, cotton, clothes, oil, mats, grain, grain seeds, sanitary wear, China clay utensils, sugar, sugar cane juice, soaps, plastic items, paints, rubber, offal, medicines/pharmaceutical products, insulated materials, ink, chemicals, spice and cosmetics.

The committee members said they needed time to think over approving a sudden hike.

“We cannot take a decision on approving a hike of 75% in a hasty manner. If reasonable hikes, say that of 10% in a year or two, were proposed in the past, it wouldn’t have affected people much.

Therefore, we will first think about how the sudden hike is going to affect residents and accordingly take a decision when we meet next,” said Raju Pednekar, chairman of the committee.

Decisions on approving hike in water charges and fire protection fees and execution of capital value-based property tax are still pending with the BMC.
