Residents of ward 8 in Thane (West) are making sure political parties do not forget the promises they have made in their manifestos. They have come up with their own three-page manifesto and will ask candidates to sign it. They will vote only for those candidates who sign the manifesto.
The manifesto includes finer details of every problem of the ward, a vision for the city and a 'Right to recall' clause. The candidate who signs the manifesto will have to give his/her resignation in advance so that if they fail to deliver, they can be recalled. The Loksatta party and Mumbai 227 have also made the clause compulsory for their candidates in Mumbai but this is first such move in Thane.
"Every five years, we elect the people who don't show their face even once during their tenure. We want to make them accountable this time," said Rajesh Deorey, a resident of Sidhachal housing society.
The residents had an all-party meet on Saturday where they released the manifesto in front of the candidates of ward 8 (A and B).
The event inspired by DNA's ‘My Locality My voice event’, first sensitised candidates of NCP, BJP, Shiv Sena and Independents with every problem in the area through a presentation. "We want our corporators to be a single window for all the needs and problems," said residents.
BJP leader Bhaskar Barishetty, whose wife Ragini is contesting from 8A, welcomed the idea but sought time to sign the manifesto. NCP candidate from 8A Tejal Patil said he would get back.
The residents will untill February 14 to decide the further course of action.
