Campaigning for the municipal election on Sunday took a tragic turn as four youngsters lost their lives during a rally at Kalwa.

Brothers Ashok Pahadi Rajput, 19, and Ajay Pahadi Rajput, 20; their cousin Anya Rajput, 19; and Pradeep Gupta, 28, lost their lives due to electrocution at Shivaji Nagar in Kalwa. All the deceased were residents of Shanti Nagar area.

Just as the rally of NCP candidate Mahesh Salvi from Ward 44 was about to start at around 10.30am, the flag in Anya’s hand, attached to a metal pole, touched the high tension wire overhead and released a high voltage current. The situation worsened as he was standing over a manhole with an iron lid. The other three deceased rushed to save Anya with their flags in hand, but the intensity of the shock was such that they were thrown in the air and fell on the other party members.  All four died on the spot.

Most of the boys were sole breadwinners of their families. NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad and NCP MP Ganesh Naik have announced Rs2.5 lakh  for the family of the deceased persons and Rs25,000 each for the 11 people who were also injured in the incident.
