A group of Sunni representatives of different organisations said on Tuesday that no candidate associated with Wahabi ideology be voted in civic elections. The statement was made in a press conference at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh. The conference had members of All India Ulama and Mashaikh Board (AIUMB), Raza Academy, All India Sunni Tablighi Jamaat, Anjuman Barkaat-e-Raza, All India Qazi Board (ALQB) and Tanzeem Aimma-e-Masjid.

“Wahabi ideology is the root cause of all the problems in the world. We urge all peace-loving people not to vote for such candidates,” said Syed Babar Ashraf, secretary of AIUMB.

It has not yet identified how many Wahabi candidates are in the fray. “Muslims will be told if they go to any masjid of dargah,” said Saeed Noori of Raza Academy.

Abu Azmi of Samajwadi Party said, “This is a corporation election. I am not fighting to elect a religious leader. All my friends believe in Sunni sect and this is dividing the votes and that is what Congress and RSS wants.”
