BMC gets first X-ray scanner for octroi naka

The civic body has outsourced the scanner from an US-based company American science and engineering through Emergency Electronics Security Private Limited.

In a bid to control octroi evasion, the civic body is close to deploying X-ray scanners at nakas. An octroi naka in the city finally gets an X-ray scanners but on experimental basis. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed a mobile X-ray scanner at the Mumbai-Panvel Highway Naka in Mankhurd.

The civic body has outsourced the scanner from an US-based company American science and engineering through Emergency Electronics Security Private Limited. After the trail a report will be submitted to decide on the scanners.

“The scanner has been deployed at the naka on trial for 10 days. We will observe the efficacy of the scanner. Based on the trial the civic vigilance department will be submitting a report. If the results are up to the mark, they may be used soon,” said Rajiv Jalota, additional municipal commissioner.

The proposal for installing scanners at the octroi nakas has been impending since 2003. A civic official stated that the hitch with the scanner was their inability of differentiate from the nature of the article.

“Many times the goods dealer mis-declared the goods imported to the city, we needed scanners which were capable of identifying the difference in resembling the articles,” said a senior official.

The scanner was deployed on June 13. The company has installed the scanner on a concessional basis, free of cost. The mobile X-ray is equipped with backscatter technology which is capable of detecting reflection of wave particles, or signals “The scanner which we have installed is capable of detecting wrong declaration, fake value, quantity, weight-age, and concealed objects,” added Jalota.

Later on if desirable results are got, nine scanners will be installed at all five octroi gates: the Western Express Highway Naka (Dahisar), the Eastern Express Highway Naka (Mulund East), Lal Bahadhur Shastri Marg Naka (Mulund West), Mulund-Airoli Link Road Naka (Airoli) and the Mumbai-Panvel Highway Naka (Mankhurd).
