On Saturday, Sunil Prabhu, mayor of Mumbai, said that citizens should use more eco-friendly Ganpati idols so that marine life is protected. “Citizens should celebrate the festival in an eco-friendly way,” said Prabhu, speaking after inaugurating an exhibition of eco-friendly Ganpati idols in the civic headquarters at CST. “Idols made up of clay and papier mache dissolve in water as soon as it is immersed, which makes it the best option when conserving and protecting the environment is taken into account.”
Nirmal Jyot trust, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Shaadu Murtikar Sangathana, Siddhivinayak Temple Trust and BMC have jointly started the awareness campaign across the city and have lined up several exhibitions in places including ward offices and Mantralaya. “The purpose of such exhibitions is to convey to people the real essence of religion and festivals. Along with the clay idols, we are also creating awareness about artificial ponds,” explained Alka Shah from Nirmal Jyot trust. Shah has requested the civic authorities to help them build an artificial pond in Lokhandwala, Andheri – West.
Dr Kishore Kshirsagar, deputy municipal commissioner and in- charge of Ganpati festival arrangement in the city said, “We want people to follow eco-friendly ways to celebrate the festival. We have started a campaign which urges people to not use plastic or thermocol material for decoration since these are harmful to the environment when disposed.”
Sandeep Gajakosh, from Prathmesh eco-friendly Ganapati workshop, said that people have started realising that the environment should be preserved. He added that last year he had prepared only 50 idols using papier mache. This year, he made 150 such idols using paper, white ink and gum. “Last year was just an experiment with the 50 idols. But today people are actually changing their mindset”, said Sandeep.
