The Diwali fever in Mantralaya hit its peak on Saturday as the attendance fell to a record 30%. The employees joined the bureaucrats and ministers in their extended Diwali celebrations.

As reported in DNA (October 24), a senior state government official had speculated that as many as 25% of the state government officers and employees would be on leave in the next two weeks.

The official Diwali holiday was on October 26, 27 but with the government declaring October 28 as a government holiday, it was time to make merry.

Most of the employees had applied for the leave last Saturday, much before the Diwali holiday so that they could enjoy the extended weekend. Of the total number of 8239 employees only 2539 attended office, a percentage to 30.82, a record breaking low in the recent past.

General Administration Department (11.17%), Directorate of Small Savings(4.09%), Information and Public Relations (25.65%) and public health department (20.17%) were the departments with the lowest attendance. Marathi Bhasha, Housing and Lokayukta department witnessed a 45 to 46% attendance, the highest.

According to an officer from GAD, the employees had applied for the casual leave well before Diwali.

“The attendance had started falling from the start of the week as only 64.26 and 62.74% employee attended their offices. The regular average attendance ranges between 65 and 74% as 10% employees are on outdoor duties, while rest are on official applied leave,” he added.

However, a point to be noted is that most of the bureaucrats do not swipe their card, which could result in non-reflection of attendance. And while the attendance of the bureaucrats dipped significantly, none of the ministers attended their office on Saturday.

Another officer said that the work gets largely affected as the movement of the files become impossible without the assisting staff.

“Instead of keeping the Mantralaya working on Saturday, administration should have swapped it with one of the non-working Saturdays. Lesser work would have been affected in that case,” he said.
