BMC budget focuses on improving water condition

The water supply and sewerage department has been allocated the topmost priority, with an estimated capital outlay of around Rs3,371. 52 crore.

For the past few months, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have been desperately planning ways to meet the city’s rising water needs after the unexpectedly low rainfall last year. The BMC budget clearly reflects the civic body’s focus this year.

The civic body plans to get water from natural as well as unconventional sources. The provision for water supply and related departments, like sewage, has gone up by Rs300 crore this year. The budget allocation for 2010-11 is Rs3,371crore, while last year it was Rs3,006 crore.

Dam in Thane
The BMC has also proposed a new dam at Gargai River in Thane district. A feasibility study has been completed and the BMC has earmarked Rs5 crore for consultancy services for the dam. The dam is estimated to increase water supply by 440 million litres daily.

Middle Vaitarna
Another major provision has been made for the Middle Vaitarna III-A project. While the project has been completed, other allied works remain.

Desalination
One of the unconventional sources of water that the BMC is looking at is sea water and setting up of desalination plants.
The budget allocation for this is Rs 1 crore. BMC plans to setting up desalination plants at Navy Nagar, Versova, Colaba and Wadala. The first one of these is likely to come up at Navy Navy Nagar, Colaba.

Reservoirs, pipelines
The BMC will also take up reconstruction of reservoirs at Worli, Bhandup Hill and Veravali. The estimated cost of this is around Rs35 crore and the civic body has allocated Rs25 crore for it this year. The corporation has even proposed re-laying and restructuring of 77-km of old water pipelines at a cost of Rs107 crore.
