Even though the Shiv Sena’s much-touted vada pav scheme is yet to take off, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now keen to add kanda poha to its menu.
A proposal to allot 125 kanda poha handcarts in various civic-owned premises was approved at the civic improvements committee meeting on Monday. The demand to allot these handcarts was made by the Congress opposition in February this year, after the civic administration decided to allot 125 Shiv vada pav stalls to unemployed youth and women self-help groups on Shiv Sena’s demand.
The Shiv vada pav scheme, however, has been grounded. Restrictions put by development control regulations have made it difficult to accommodate even a single proposed stall. “The vada pav scheme was haphazardly brought to cater to Sena’s agenda. The kanda poha scheme is now being similarly tabled to please the political pundits in the opposition camp,” a civic official said.
On Monday, while BJP wanted the scheme be out of bounds for ‘outsiders’, the MNS and Shiv Sena were particular about 90% reservation for the Marathis.
The original proposal gave priority to unemployed locals, women self-help groups, handicapped and traditional kanda poha stall owners.
