Unhappy that institute charges Rs1 lakh fees from them and still doesn’t provide basic amenities.
Over 700 students of city-based Bansilal Ramnath Agarwal Charitable Trust’s (BRACT) Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology (VIIT), went on strike on March 16 to protest against the management for not providing basic amenities on the Kondwa campus.
The students from first to final year observed a ‘Black Day’ and raised their voices against the management owing to numerous problems they are facing. The students are annoyed that in spite of charging Rs1 lakh fees per year, the college is unable to provide basic amenities like drinking water, toilet, fans, lights and security.
Speaking to DNA, Aniket Mallesh, first year student of VIIT, said, “The fee for the current academic year is Rs1 lakh. Despite extracting such high fees from students, the building complex, where the first year classes are held, is under construction and has no electricity, proper sanitation system or drinking water.” He also informed that there is a hike of Rs10,000 every year in the fees.
“With the onset of summer it is very hot and suffocating and without electricity fans don’t work. On approaching the college authorities, their reply was that they don’t have any funds,” said Mallesh. He said that if each of the 700 first year students is paying
Rs1 lakh, it adds up to a fee collection of Rs7 crore in a year. “How can the college authorities then say they don’t have funds? We want to know where our money is being used,” he added.
The students are enraged with the cold reaction from the college management and have decided to continue with their strike on Monday till their problems are not resolved. Another first year student, Awlokil Meshram, asked whether the Shikshan Shulk Samiti, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or BRACT have any solution to the problems they face. “The entrance road to the college is in a very bad shape and at the entrance of the building a pit is dug due to which students have to walk on a dangerous makeshift wooden ramp placed on the pit,” he said.
A first year girl student from the same VIIT college, said, “The campus is surrounded by slum areas and since there is no fence wall, anybody strolls into the campus. Especially ruffians from nearby slums enter the campus and trouble the girl students. We girls feel unsafe on the campus and during late evenings if we have to stay back for any campus events, it becomes a nightmare for us and our parents.”
