Last month, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s surprise visit to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) office in the city ruffled the Shiv Sena’s feathers.

Now, another move that the national party has planned is bound to irk its ally.

The BJP has decided to help North Indian migrants, who have lived in the city for more than 15 years, procure domicile certificates. BJP leader in the BMC Ashish Shelar is conducting the drive in his constituency.

“There are many North Indians who have been living in Mumbai for many years. However, they don’t have proper documentation as they cannot prove they are domiciled citizens of the state. As a result, they are often not considered for several government schemes,” said Shelar, who was an aspirant for the post of the BJP’s city unit chief but had to accept Raj Purohit instead.

In the coming week, the party will start a drive in the Bandra assembly constituency.

The domicile certificate is a must for benefits under government policies. They are needed for college admissions. Migrants without the certificate as they are not aware of its necessity are often counted as ‘influx’.

Sunil Prabhu, Shiv Sena leader in the BMC, denied that the BJP’s latest move would affect the alliance though the Sena has always maintained an anti-migrant stance.

Rajhans Singh, Congress leader in the BMC, welcomed the BJP’s drive. “We [North Indians] have been living in Mumbai and Maharashtra for generations. We, too, are sons of the soil.”
