The central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finally decided to appoint Vinod Tawde as the leader of the opposition in Maharashtra  legislature council.

The decision is significant as it gears up to hand over the reins of the state council to a younger and aggressive leader.

Tawde, 47, will replace senior BJP leader Pandurang Phundkar who served as opposition leader in state council for seven consecutive years.

The BJP plans to organise a function to formally pronounce the change of guard at a function in Nagpur on December 13.

The BJP central leadership had given its consent for Tawde to lead the state council last June. However, intra-party differences between BJP president Nitin Gadkari and deputy leader of Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde camps over appointments at state levels forced the Centre to keep on hold his appointment.

The top leadership in BJP had indicated to the state unit that they can only postpone the decision but not roll back.

Tawde is known for his astuteness in drawing party strategies and organisational skills. Given the internal equations within the BJP, he is perceived as to be close to Gadkari.

But, a close aide of Munde said: “There are often differences over decision making or policy matters. But, Munde had never expressed his reservations to Tawde taking the reins of opposition leader in state council.”
