In a bid to improve the quality of service and to keep a tab on government workers in rural areas, the state rural development department plans to introduce the biometric attendance system.
“We want to introduce the system in schools in rural areas so that we can keep track of the attendance of teachers. We also want to track students’ attendance through it,” said Jayant Patil, minister for rural development.
Patil was speaking during a two-day seminar, Gram Sabha 2010, which was organised by the Welingkar Institute of Management.
“It’s very important to track all government services in villages. We get complaints that many don’t even come for work. Salaries will be linked to the system. Initially, we plan to implement it for the rural development department and then extend it to other government servicemen who work in villages,” he said.
A trial of this system was recently conducted at an ‘ashram shala’ in Solapur district. “Once the trials start and show proper results, we’ll implement it across the state. It could start from the next financial year,” said Patil.
