In an attempt to take the polio eradication drive to the next level, Pune-based Serum Institute had a meeting with Bill Gates, who visited the institute on Thursday. The institute put forward its eagerness to tie-up with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop injectable polio vaccines.

Dr Cyrus Poonawalla of the institute said this after Gates visited the institute’s plant in Hadapsar, near Pune.

Gates said that the institute had deeply influenced the vaccine world. “The world is dependent on the quality vaccine that Serum produces. I am impressed with the high quality and high quantity work of the institute,’’ he said, adding that he would like to see new blocks in the campus in the future, producing  vaccines for malaria and HIV.

Gates said that there is a need for cost-effective vaccines against various infectious diseases and his foundation is dedicated to invest more in the research on such vaccines. “The foundation is interested in several new products developed at the Serum Institute. I would love to see more on vaccine research,” he said.
At present, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), Gates’ foundation and Serum Institute are partners in several ongoing immunization programmes around the world. The institute exports vaccines for GAVI projects while Gates’ foundation funds clinical trials, said Poonawalla.

The institute, which exports vaccines to 130 nations, is also developing affordable rotavirus and pneumococcal vaccines for GAVI.
