Noted thinker and political scientist Bhaskar Laxman alias Bha La Bhole passed away in Nagpur on Thursday. He was 67.
Bhole was admitted in a private hospital after suffering an asthma attack a month ago. He is survived by wife Vijaya, son Hiranmay, and daughter Gauri Bhat. The last rites were performed on Thursday evening.
A staunch Gandhian and astute scholar who never compromised on his secular principles, Bhole, who favoured the creation of small states in the country, retired in 2002 as head of the political science department, Nagpur University.
Last year, Bhole was conferred with the Marwari Foundation’s Prabodhankar Thackeray Award. He wrote and edited several acclaimed books, including Dusare Swatantrya; Rajakiya Bharat; Sattantar ani Nantar, and Shikshan ani Sanskruti.
Bhole provided an unbiased critique of the Dalit, social, and political movements. He was a vociferous voice against Indira Gandhi’s decision to impose Emergency in the country in 1975. Bhole penned several books and edited Marathi publications.
Born on September 30, 1942, in Talkhed village of Buldhana district, Bhole began his academic career with Government College in Aurangabad. He joined the political science department of the Nagpur University in 1970.
