Taking serious note of horrendous traffic situation in the city and insensitivity of traffic police and BEST employees towards pedestrians, the Bombay High Court has summoned BEST general manager and home secretary, apart from joint commissioner of police (traffic), BMC deputy chief engineer of roads and concerned RTO officers.

It was while hearing a PIL filed by Bombay Bar Association, seeking strict action against violators of traffic rules and regulations, that the division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Niteen Jamdar has directed all the officers to remain present in the court on May 7.

Pointing out that traffic police constables behaved rudely with pedestrians, an advocate cited how at the Peddar Road crossing opposite Jaslok hospital, traffic constables let the vehicles pass even when the signal is green for pedestrians. “They tell us we (traffic constables) are here to monitor traffic and not pedestrians,” added the advocate. Further, advocate Armin Wandrewala, who has intervened in the PIL, pointed out that BEST buses too fail to abide by traffic signals.

Irked by the fact that three cops, of the rank of senior inspector, were present for the hearing, chief justice remarked, “We have said earlier that in a serious case like this, let a senior officer of the level of joint commissioner of police or at least a DCP be present.” This was when the bench summoned the top officials for the next hearing on May 7.
