“Be good towards the prisoners, Ramzan is going to start and they have some requirements which you should meet,” the Bombay high court said while directing the prison department to decide on the plea of a 1993 serial bomb blast accused who sought to lift the ban imposed on non-veg food in canteens.

The division bench of justices Ranjana Desai and RV More said, “You decide considering the security and prison rules, but at the same time if some suggestions are made, then you also need to consider them.”

Public prosecutor Pandurang Pol informed the court, “During Ramzan prisoners are provided with food like sheer khurma, dates and fruits in prison before sunrise and after sunset.”

To which the court replied “We are looking for a long-term solution. For Ramzan and other festival you should provide the required food.”

The court also directed the prison department to begin providing non-veg food once a month after considering the rules and regulations. Pol replied to it by stating that “Soon a meeting of prison officials will consider the issue in detail.”

Earlier the court had directed the prison department to consider the suggestions made by the accused to be give non-veg food once a week and eggs for breakfast every day.

A 1993 serial bomb blast accused Sardar Shawali Khan has filed a review petition in the high court against the circular issued by inspector general of prison on December 5, 2008, banning non-veg food for prisoners and discontinuing non-veg food in the prison canteen too.

As per prison rules, non veg-food is allowed on four occasions in a year  — twice during Eid, once during Christmas, and a day after Dussehra. The hearing on the petition has been adjourned for two weeks.
