Barc staff falls to his death trying to save bird

Eagerness to help a bird in distress cost a Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Barc) staff his life on Tuesday. Sadanand Shelar died after falling from the third storey of his building. Shelar worked as a tradesman with the CDMA-D wing of Barc and resided in Netravati building at Barc Colony, Trombay.

According to police, on Tuesday afternoon, Shelar had gone to water his plants kept on a slab e xtension outside his flat. While watering the plants, he spotted the pigeon struggling to free its legs entangled in a tuft of hair.

A senior police officer said, “A person who was standing downstairs saw Shelar inching forward on the slab, trying to help the pigeon. But, the pigeon suddenly flapped its wings causing Shelar to lose his balance and fall.”

The officer added, “The witness immediately informed Barc security, who rushed Shelar to Barc hospital where he was declared dead before admission. According to doctors, Shelar had suffered multiple fractures which resulted in death.” The slab outside Shelar’s window is around two-and-half-feet wide and is around four feet under the sill. Shelar fell on to the concrete slab on the first floor.

A police patrol van that was passing near Barc in the afternoon informed was about the incident. Assistant commissioner of police, Trombay division, Jalinder Khandagle, who was present in the van, then rushed to the hospital to check on Shelar.

In her statement to the police, Shelar’s wife Geeta said “My husband waters the plants every morning. As today was Gudi Padwa, he had day off, so he watered the plants in the afternoon when the incident took place.” His son-in-law told police that Shelar was an avid bird lover and would rescue all sorts of injured birds that he spotted in the Barc colony.
