The state commissioner and registrar of cooperative societies, Rajagopal Devara, has appealed to commercial banks to extend substantial credit to the agriculture sector to remove regional disparity in the state.

He was speaking at the state credit seminar organised by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) recently to discuss bank credit projections for 2011-12 for Maharashtra at the College of Agriculture
Banking.

Executive director of Nabard, Prakash Bakshi, released the state focus paper 2011-12 prepared by Nabard. The major chunk of Nabard’s potential link plan (PLP) allocation is for the agriculture sector. As no agency can provide a comprehensive package for several crops, specific crops could be identified in coordination with stakeholders, the state government, Nabard and the banks.

Chief general manager of Nabard, P Satish, highlighted the initiatives taken by Nabard, RBI, the government of India and the state government for the development of agriculture and rural sectors.
