A Bank of India staffer has been held by the Gamdevi police for allegedly duping a British national customer to the tune of over Rs14.88 lakh. The victim had opened a fixed deposit with the bank that was used by the staffer for his personal benefit.

The arrested person has been identified as Chandrika Bipin Das.
According to the police, the victim Suryakant Patel, 58, who lives in London, United Kingdom, had invested over Rs14.88 lakh in March 1999 in a fix deposit scheme at the Mahalaxmi branch of the Bank of India.

“Sunil Patel, who works at the same bank, with Das had prepared bogus documents of the fixed deposit of the victim. They had allegedly misused the money for their personal benefit,” said a police officer from the Gamdevi station.

“The victim recently came to India and asked the bank about his fixed deposit, but learned that there was no deposit in the bank. He asked for the money but the bank officials gave him lame excuses. He then approached the Girgaum metropolitan magistrate court two months ago and the court then asked the Gamdevi police to register a case and investigate the matter,” the official added.

“We have registered a case of misappropriation against the bank staffers, including the branch manager. We have arrested Das and are yet to arrest Patel in this case,” said another officer at the Gamdevi police station.

“We are also in the process of investigating whether more staffers were involved in this fraud and whether other customers have also been duped by these people in a similar fashion,” said added the
officer.
