The special operations wing and crime branch unit (III) of the Pune police, in a joint operation on Saturday, arrested a 24-year-old Bangladeshi, Meelon Niranjan Mistri, from Narayangaon, 60km from Pune, on suspicion of having illegal connections with Pakistan.

Mistri, living in Narayangaon, hails from Chouradi village in Borishal district of Bangladesh.

Assistant police inspector Shashikant Chavan of Narayangaon police station told DNA, “Mistri arrived in India a year ago and was living in Narayangaon for the past month. Earlier, he lived in Manchar for eight months and used to work as a labourer. We have seized his school leaving certificate and a duplicate PAN card,” he added.

The team was led by police inspector Sunil Tambe of the special operations wing. Crime branch unit (III) police inspector Mohan Vidhate laid a trap and arrested Mistri from Narayangaon.

Tambe said, “We kept Mistri under surveillance following a tip-off that he had connections in Pakistan. We have obtained his custody for two days.”

Police sources said Mistri used to call up people in the neighbouring country regularly. “We are trying to identify the people he called up and the purpose behind his calls,” they added.
