Mumbai’s latest iconic identity — the 4.7km long Bandra-Worli Sea Link will soon be patented by its present owner — the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

The corporation is in the process of completing the formalities of declaring the sea link as its patented product. The process will be completed by May this year.

Newly appointed MSRDC vice chairman and managing director Bipin Srimali said that the decision to put a patent on the sea link was taken after it was noticed that a number of private players were using the sea link as their logo without even informing its owner- the MSRDC.

“We understand that the sea link is not just a public utility used by millions of Mumbaikars everyday, but also something that needs to be cherished as an asset. 18 months after the sea link was thrown opened to the public, a number of private companies and even general public were using its pictures to depict the city of Mumbai,” said Srimali.

While personal usage of photographs and diagrams of the sea link can be permitted, corporate houses and companies cannot use the pictures of the sea link for free.

“After I took charge of the corporation, I decided to work on the patent for the sea link and subsequently we decided to speak to some of the reputed international legal firms,” informed Srimali.

As per the idea, the entire design of the sea link and pictorial representation will have MSRDC’s patent. “To make it simpler, no company- whether private or even state or a central government organisation will be allowed to use any portion of the sea link to showcase or advertise their products or services.

"It has been noticed that there have been many instances where the images have been used illegally. Unfortunately, there are a number of cases where the pictures or videos have not been of a particular standard as expected by us. At times, the sea link pictures have not been put to ethical use. To prevent this, we will patent the sea link,” added Srimali.

He further informed that an agency will be appointed to monitor the usage on a daily basis. “The process should be completed by May,” concluded the official.
