Mumbai: The skywalk at Bandra (East) may soon see some modifications. Taking lessons from the structural designs of other skywalks, especially the one in Mira Road (East), the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to provide more shield to the 1.3-km walkway that was inaugurated in June last year.
Apart from changes for protection against rains, the 'yellow caterpillar' may get a different colour. According to Anand Pahal, additional chief engineer, MMRDA, the authority has learnt a number of lessons during a visit to the skywalk that is being constructed at Mira Road. "It is a fact that the first ever skywalk is not protecting the pedestrians well, during monsoons. We have certain plans to cover up the sides of the walkway so that it will stop the rains from coming in. We also plan to cover the parts below the skywalk with aluminium composite panels (ACP sheets). This would ensure better looks as well as advertising space," said Pahal.
Pahal said that the authority is committed to complete the work for 50 skywalks by March next year. "While deciding on the necessity of the skywalks, we have mainly taken the opinions of the local urban bodies, local representatives as well as some of the prominent citizens. The total cost of the project is approximately Rs1,471 crore. However, this cost includes construction of 57 skywalks, out of which seven have been dropped," he said.
