The pause button on the campaign against errant auto rickshaw drivers has finally been pressed by the city’s RTO officials.
An inadequate number of the gadgets which help in detecting tampered meters, as well as lethargic officials from the enforcement squads, had taken the steam out of the heavily publicised campaign since early December.
Now, since most of their time is taken up in distributing invitation cards and making arrangements for the Chief Minister’s event for the launch of the state-wide Road Safety Campaign, RTO officials have halted their much-publicised campaign against errant autorickshaw drivers for the time being.
A senior official from the Andheri RTO said, “We are facing an acute staff crunch and getting even routine work completed is a challenge. The additional burden of sending invitation cards and arranging for events to promote road safety for 15 days, has meant that no timeis left for other things. However, we have dedicated a day towards tackling the problem of arbitrary fare refusals by auto rickshaw drivers in the 15-day-long program. We will ask our flying squad officials to book errant drivers that day.” Another official from the Andheri RTO said, “We will not give up on the campaign. Inspections will most likely be revived after 15 days.”
An official from the Eastern RTO expressed optimism about the revival of the campaign in late January.
“We will most likely receive two more gadgets which will help us book errant drivers in a much faster and easier way. This may help us to revive the campaign,” he said.
