Hospitality has always been synonymous with the hotel industry. ‘Atithya 2011- A Reflection of Hospitality’ was a week-long intercollegiate event that was a step towards promoting research and apprising students of the latest standards in the industry.

In its second year now, Atithya was organised by the All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society’s (AISSMS) College of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (CHMCT), supported by the University of Pune, from January 31 to February 4 on the college campus in Shivajinagar. As many as 12 hotel management and catering technology institutes from Pune, Ahmednagar, Lonavla and Lavasa participated in Atithya.

Principal of AISSMS’ CHMCT, Sonali Jadhav, said, “The event brings together educators, professionals and students to share their insights on the needs of this emerging industry. The event highlighted the important elements of hotel management and catering technology. The need of the hour is to create a research-oriented atmosphere among aspiring professionals and cultivate an analytical approach.”

This year’s event started off with a national seminar on ‘Impact of the changing environment on the hotel industry’, wherein experts and students presented 24 research papers on the subject.

Dignitaries who attended the inaugural function include general manager, Vivanta by Taj Blue Diamond, Pune, Sandip Mukherjee, and honorary secretary of AISSMS, Capt Shivaji Mahadkar among others.

“The entire package of Atithya — with the seminar, competitions and workshops — allows students to interact with each other and the industry for free exchange of ideas. The main aim of the event is to synchronise the needs of the industry with those put forth by prospective hospitality professionals,” said Mahadkar.

The seminar was followed by workshops on fruit and vegetable carving, salad and plate presentations, punch craft, wine appreciation and candle making. Experts conducted workshops and shared their knowledge and experience by helping students
enhance their skills.

The competitions included visually appealing themes of gift wrapping, table and décor, restaurant planning and designing, identifying dish ingredients, cooking, serving and also a quiz contest.

Overall, DY Patil Institute of Hotel and Catering Technology, Wakad, scored the highest points and won the champions’ trophy of Atithya 2011.

The week culminated in a mega food festival themed ‘Kafila- A journey through the North West Frontier’. The multi-cuisine menu consisted of more than 45 dishes from Kashmir, Punjab, Peshawar, Sindh, Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The décor and service added to the experience.
