Ashok Chavan to launch housing scheme across Maharashtra on April 10

The pilot project for an ambitious housing scheme covering the poor and shelterless people across Maharashtra would be launched near here tomorrow by chief minister Ashok Chavan, sources said today.

Under the government-sponsored scheme, Garkul Yojana, there is a proposal to build 10 lakh homes for the weaker sections of the society.

Deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal and several other ministers are likely to attend the function to be held in Arni tehsil of this district in Vidarbha.

According to the sources, the government had, on March 9, 2009, announced that 10 lakh houses would be construted in three years time across the state for people living below poverty line (BPL).

Divisional social welfare officer Madhav Vaidya, in a press note, said under the scheme, the annual income of the beneficiary should be Rs70,000, Rs1,50,000 and Rs2,00,000 in rural, Municipal Council area and Municipal Corporation areas respectively.

Each of the beneficiary would be provided a 269 sq feet house, he said.
