With a view to keeping its promise of developing the state’s infrastructure, the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party government has taken steps to ensure speedy and efficient completion of projects undertaken by private-public partnerships.

A company with an initial capital of Rs500 crore has been formed for funding such projects. Apart from this, a delivery monitoring unit has been set up in the chief minister’s office to oversee the implementation of both the state’s schemes and the Centre’s flagship schemes.

The Ashok Chavan-led Congress-NCP government, which completes 100 days today, had come to power with a definite development agenda: Better infrastructure, administrative reforms, more effective law and order machinery and improved electricity generation, within its first 100 days.

“The unit will not only monitor implementation of the schemes, but also help authorities sort out implementation problems. A separate desk has also been set up in the CM’s office to follow up the demands made by public representatives,” a press note released on Saturday by the CM’s office, stated.

Chavan recently okayed a budget of Rs6,143 crore for
infrastructure development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The government’s most important decision, till date, has been the
formation of a regional cadre. Under this plan, any new entrant in state government service will have to serve at least six years in underdeveloped regions like Gadchiroli and Chandrapur. More seasoned employees, too, will have to serve in these regions if they want to be promoted.

Chavan has claimed that the government is serious about dealing with the problem of power shortage (currently the state has a daily shortfall of 5300 MW). The state Cabinet has cleared a power project in Uran.

“We have succeeded in making five major cities — Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad, Pune and Mumbai — load-shedding free. We have a plan to provide 24-hour electricity to all 35 district headquarters within a year,” an official in the CM’s office said.

The formation of Force One for combatting terrorism, and the steps to modernise the police force are an effort to ramp up the law and order situation in the state.
