Here’s a shocker. Brothers and trusted lieutenants of gangster-turned politician Arun Gawli are illegally ‘residing’ in temporary sheds in a slum colony outside the Dagdi Chawl in Byculla. This is what the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has claimed, enlisting Gawli’s brothers – Pradeep Gawli and Vijay Ahir — as hutment dwellers for a redevelopment scheme being planned on BMC land at Rasool Jiwa Compound near Saat Rasta.

MK Enterprise, a private developer, has approached the civic body for redeveloping the plot, which has been let out by the BMC to tenants, under section 33(7) of the development control regulation.

The Gawli brothers figure as hutment dwellers in the inventory list, a copy of which is with DNA, prepared by the BMC for the redevelopment work. The inventory list was recently procured by local resident Kishor Makwana under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Even though their have been included as slum dwellers, the Byculla ward office, which prepared the inventory, itself, admits that there is no record to prove the status. Also, no structure has been assigned to their name even in the inventory, as is required by norm.

While Vijay has been a corporator in the past, Pradeep’s wife Vandana is currently a corporator representing Gawli’s political outfit Akhil Bhartiya Sena (ABS). While families of the two brothers reside in Dagdi Chawl, both own other non-slum properties outside the Chawl as well.

However, Arun Gawli’s daughter Geeta, who is also an ABS corporator, said that her kin did not own any such property in the slums. Even an affidavit filed by Vandana Gawli while contesting the civic elections does not have mention of any slum structure owned by Pradeep at the Rasool Jiwa Compound.

The inventory list also has the name of Swapnil Ghate, son of Gawli-aide Sunil Ghate, which is also bogus, said Makwana.
Interestingly, the inventory list was prepared when Arun Gawli was the MLA for the area and has been signed by assistant municipal commissioner Bhausaheb Kolekar and the then colony officer (E ward), apart from other BMC officials.

Kolekar, who is now the ward officer at Goregaon (P South) municipal ward, said that he had signed the file only after the concerned department’s officials had ratified the list and claimed that it was in order.

MK Enterprise, the private builder involved in redevelopment, was unavailable for comment.
