MULUND: Art lovers now have a permanent place to hang out in Mulund. A tie-up between the Nirmal Group and the Regional Design and Technical Development Centre (RDDC), Small Shop Paradise at Nirmal Lifestyle will soon play host to art exhibitions.

Now, RDDC would be involved in co-ordinating with artists all over the country to hold exhibitions here. Earlier, the tie-up with RDDC was only limited to the trial exhibition held for flood-affected artists between August 15-31.  For future exhibitions, as per government norms, the artists would not be charged for any exhibition cost.

The area - 2,000 sq ft  in all - which has already been the venue of various art exhibitions, will now be dedicated to budding and obscure artists from rural areas. Says Dharmesh Jain, chairman and managing director, Nirmal Group, “We have decided to promote local art. Normally, small artists get ignored. We wanted to build up a platform where people who create and appreciate art can meet.”

Artist Rajendra Gole is all praise for the initiative. “There is not a single art gallery in the mall in the city. Many people frequent malls and this would ensure greater visibility for the artists’ work,” he says.

Says RDDC assistant director R K Mishra, “This sector generates the maximum amount of employment and the numbers are only likely to increase.” Reiterating Gole’s view, Dhawal Vadhar, marketing manager, Nirmal Lifestyle, feels that it is imperative that artists take their work to the common people. Says Vadhar, “We have allocated certain days for the artists’ to stay and  demonstrate their work. “We have suggested organising state-wide art exhibitions every fortnight,” Mishra says.

Vadhar says, “There is a misplaced notion that art is only for the rich. We want to bring art to the common man.”
