City MLA and former minister of state for home, Ramesh Bagwe, on Sunday claimed that Southern Command would soon initiate the process of construction of two railway over bridges in Ghorpadi area.

“I had a meeting with officials of the Southern Command, including the army commander, Lt Gen AK Singh, and Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) authorities to discuss the matter,” the Congress MLA said, adding that the army had assured him that the project would be taken up as soon as possible.

Construction of the over bridges are extremely important but are on hold for several years. The two railway crossings which dissect Ghorpadi village are located on the Pune-Miraj and Pune-Solapur routes of the railways.

The roads here witness traffic congestion everyday as the area links several important and growing suburbs of the city such as Kalyaninagar, Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, BT Kawade Road, Koregaon Park, Magarpatta, Ahmednagar and Solapur roads.
The project so far could not make any headway apparently due to absence of coordination between the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM) cell, the army, PCB and the Pune divisional railway manager’s office.

Bagwe said that the initial design made for the project has been changed by the engineers of the Southern Command.
“The new design has been sent to the JNNURM cell of the PMC for approval. Once it is sanctioned, the work would start,” Bagwe said, adding that the project would cost Rs23 crore with the new design.

The MLA said, “I have requested the PCB to permit renovation of old buildings in the Cantonment and construction of hospitals and dispensaries in the area. They have assured to look into these matters.”
