Nine days after a leopard strayed into the city and injured six persons including a schoolgirl, news has come that another leopard dragged away a one-year-old baby in Shewari locality near Niphad in Nashik district in the late hours of Tuesday.

Durgesh Hiragir Gosavi was playing around his home on Tuesday evening.

Suddenly a leopard entered from the sugarcane fields nearby and pounced on him, carrying him into the thickets of the plantation.
Durgesh’s grandmother and other relatives were shocked to see the incident unfold before their eyes and started shouting and running behind the leopard to rescue the child. However, the wild cat quickly vanished into the fields.

Niphad Tehsildar Manoj Khairnar rushed to the spot and traced the body of Durgesh in the fields.

Leopards are known to be present in this region. The forest department had also put a trap for the animal, which has escaped getting caught so far.

Incidences of leopards preying on humans have become frequent in the areas of Nashik district recently.
