Mumbai: Barely three months after a portion of the Saat Rasta junction near Mahalaxmi caved in, another cavity appeared on the Slater Road at Grant Road on Thursday afternoon, making it the seventh such incident in South and Central Mumbai areas in the past two years.
The stretch near the Grant Road station caved in, exposing a two-foot deep and one-foot wide cavity.
Civic officials said leaks in water pipelines running underneath the road could have led to the breach.
Two water mains, a 30-inch water pipeline and a 50-inch water pipeline, run beneath the road surface.
DL Shinde, chief engineer, sewerage operations, said, "There does not seem to be a leak in the sewer network."
"We will establish what led to cavity formation. The damaged portion will be restored later," additional municipal commissioner RA Rajeev said.
This was the third incident of caving in reported since September last year. The two previous incidents occurred along the same stretch at Saat Rasta junction.
Rajeev said that BMC had undertaken the work of replacing old utilities including the sewer, water and the storm water drain network.
