Claiming that the Congress would repeat the history in 2012 municipal elections, the party leadership said that the Anna Hazare's campaign would help them in winning elections.

The party released the statistics of 2002 and 2007 civic elections to prove the claim that it was leading in terms of the total number of corporators.

Newly elected party spokesperson Subodh Mohite said on Thursday that his party had succeeded in keeping its leading position intact for the last two elections.

“In 2002 the Congress had won 321 of 1164 seats, while it won 282 seats in 2007. Shiv Sena followed us by winning 271 and 233 in two elections respectively. Though our number of seats reduced, the oppositions did not get benefit out of our loss. Except Nationalist Congress Party, all other parties got beating in the voters share,” he said.

Mohite also claimed that his party has always been against corruption and there was no question of Anna campaign affecting Congress's performance in the ensuing Civic elections.

“Our party has always been fighting against the corruption. Once the Lokpal bill is passed in the winter session of the parliament, the issue will automatically lose its steam and people will realized that our party had always been against the corruption,” he said.

The corporations elections are due for early next year, while municipal councils are facing the elections by end of the year.
