MUMBAI: When it comes to controversies, the Andheri unit of the Central Intelligence Unit (CIU) has spawned the A team.
More than half a dozen officers of the unit, which was formed under the leadership of then Joint Commissioner of Police Satyapal Singh, have found themselves mired in controversy.
Though the unit was later dismantled, it was from here that all of them worked at one time as a team under senior police inspector Pradeep Sharma.
Sharma, who has more than 100 encounters to his name, has recently applied for anticipatory bail in the Khwaja Yunus case while his protégé PSI Daya Nayak is being investigated for his alleged disproportionate assets and links with the underworld.
The two were earlier charged for extortion by scrap dealer Tariq Nabi. Aslam Momin, who was then a very important member of his team, was dismissed a couple of months ago for his alleged links with Iqbal Kaskar, brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Assistant police inspector (API) Ashok Borkar has now been transferred to Special Branch after he allegedly favoured Chhota Rajan aide Parvez Khan in the Malad land-grabbing case.
API Prakash Bhandari of the same unit faced embarrassment when a colleague alleged that his assets were disproportionate to his income. PI Arun Borude and PI Sachin Vaze were also arrested in the Yunus case, while PSI Nitin Vichare was booked in the multi-crore Telgi scam.Andheri unit's A team of controversies Shahkar Abidi.
