Police custody of the four accused, arrested for allegedly murdering two youths for resisting eve-teasing by them in suburban Amboli, was extended by a day today, even as they confessed to their crime, police said.

Meanwhile, friends of the two victims claimed that they had telephoned at the city police control room number "100" at the time of the incident, but it was kept on hold for at least 10 to 15 minutes, resulting in late arrival of police.

They claimed that had police responded immediately and reached the spot on time, the murders could have been averted.

On October 20, Reuben Fernandez (28) and Keenan Santos (25) were attacked with choppers by a group of four after the duo objected to their acts of indecent behaviour against girls with whom they had gone on an outing. Keenan died on the spot, while Fernandez died in a hospital on Monday.

Santos and Fernandez, along with five others, including three girls, had gone to the bar to have dinner and watch a cricket match on a giant screen put up there. After a while, they came out of the restaurant and were standing near a pan-shop when the incident had occurred, police said.

"The four accused were produced before a local court which extended their police custody for one more day," VD Bhoite, senior inspector of DN Nagar police station told PTI.

"The accused have confessed to the crime and both the weapons used have been recovered. We have very good evidence against them," Deputy Police Commissioner Pratap Digaonkar told PTI.

Bhoite said police had sought a further 14 days custody of the accused but the court extended their remand by one day after studying the probe done so far.

It is a watertight case with substantial evidences, he said adding, "Recording of statements of some more witnesses is underway."

Meanwhile, Santos's girlfriend Priyanka Fernandes claimed that the double murder could have been averted had police responded to her friend's call at "100" at the earliest.

"When one my friend called at 100, our call was kept on hold for 10-15 minutes. After that, police started taking details," she added.
