The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday gave a clarion call for realignment of political forces, cutting across ideological barriers to isolate the Congress-NCP coalition in Maharashtra.

Thus setting up the stage for a grand alliance of political parties, namely the BJP, Shiv Sena, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Republic Left Democratic Front (RLDF). Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, said, “It is possible for the BJP, Sena, MNS and the third front to work together to overthrow the corrupt Congress-NCP government in the state.”

The BJP has taken the lead, sensing the undercurrents of unrest among the people due to price rise and corruption in the government.

As Munde said, “The Congress coalition in state and at the Centre is embroiled in a series of scams. The government policies appear to be against the people. The current situation reminds us of the 1975 agitation under the leadership of Jaiprakash Narayan. The unrest across country is idle for political parties to join hands to overthrow the Congress.”

The BJP’s political resolve to consolidate its gains through coalition politics marks its determination to return to the centre-stage. A senior leader said, “The single-point agenda is to weaken the Congress base in every district, seeking the help from other political parties to reaffirm BJP’s political identity.”

According to BJP leader Madhav Bhandari, “The grand alliance call given by Munde is a long term political strategy and not restricted to the coming municipal corporation elections.” he said, “ The stage is set for ‘satta parivartan’ (change of government) and the opposition wants to reach out to the people to bring about the transformation.”

The call for alliance comes after BJP’s top leadership convened a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting in Delhi a week ago. Even there the top leadership discussed ways to consolidate the party’s support base among the allies who still are inclined to support Congress or the third front.

Last fortnight Republican Party of India chief, Ramdas Athavale, held talks with Sena chief Bal Thackeray signalling the possibility of reviving the Bhim Shakti and Shiv Shakti concept, which has remained on paper for the last ten years. The BJP is also not averse to accommodating MNS.

As Munde said, “The larger game plan is to work out strategies to ensure non-Congress vote bank remains intact.”
