A standard XI student of Akurdi-based Shri Mhalsakant Junior College, Ankita Nagarkar, is one among 22 students across the country selected by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) for this year’s Ignite 2011 award.

Ankita’s innovation involves use of colour pins in staplers to indicate that the pins are finished. The innovation of colour pins is useful and will prevent work disturbance. The last three pins of the bundle are red. Once a person comes to the end of bundle, colour pins become visible. He can replace the pin bundle immediately and continue with his work.

NIF every year holds an innovation competition for students studying in standard VIII onwards. Ankita is the only one from the state to be selected for the award.

She, along with other award winners, would receive the awards from former president APJ Abdul Kalam on November 11 at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

Ankita passed her matriculation examination from St Ursula High School, Akurdi, and had participated in the competition for 2010-11. She is presently pursuing her studies in science stream (bifocal).

“I plan to study engineering and want to do research,’’ said Ankita.

Her father, Ashok Nagarkar, is a scientist in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Before the function, these students will also take part in a workshop organised by the foundation. There will also be an exhibition of all award-winning entries. All awarded ideas and innovations will be provided incubation support, including prototyping and patenting.

NIF celebrates October 15 (Kalam’s birthday) as Children’s Creativity and Innovation Day every year. The Ignite competition is organised by NIF in association with the Central Board of Secondary Education, Society for Research and Initiatives in Sustainable Technologies and Institutions, and various state education boards and other partners.
