The Bombay high court on Tuesday directed Anil Kale, agriculturist and social activist from Baramati, to approach a local court and file a private complaint seeking criminal action against deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

A division bench of justice VM Kanade and justice PD Kode was hearing a petition filed by Kale, who wanted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe Pawar for allegedly making false claims about his educational qualifications on the government website, and providing false information in his affidavit before the Election Commission (EC).

Justice Kanade said that the petitioner had an alternative to approaching the high court. “You can file a private complaint with the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Baramati.”

VP Patil, advocate for Kale, stated that the official government website showed Pawar was a B.Com graduate. However, his affidavit before the EC shows that he is an SSC pass.

“Submitting wrong information on a government website misleads citizens regarding his qualification,” said Patil.

Patil pointed out to the court that Pawar had furnished false information to the EC as well. The court asked him to initiate separate proceedings in that case. Kale’s petition alleges that Pawar’s affidavit before the EC, dated September 23, 2009, contained several false statements concerning his assets and vehicles.

According to Kale’s petition, he had lodged a complaint with the EC on April 7, 2011, regarding the alleged threat issued to him by Pawar. He also lodged a complaint with the senior police inspector of the Baramati city police station.
