In a fresh scam which is bound to see more red faces in Maharashtra’s ruling coalition, it has emerged that deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had allegedly misused power allotting three acres of prime land near Karjat to AG Mercantile for tourism development.

This is located in the picturesque neighbourhood of the famous Nitin Desai studios. Pawar is one of the directors of the said company and even holds 8,800 shares of the total 25,000 shares according to documents.

The documents reveal a strange quid-pro-quo arrangement wherein AG Mercantile would help strengthen the existing Bhilavli dam in return for this largesse. This was intended to remove any opposition from locals who were told that they would benefit.

Another name which will raise quite a few eyebrows is one Gaytari Pant Pardeshi who is the second-largest share holder with as many as 7,200 shares. Already many are wondering how she is connected to the deputy chief minister.

There are 39 stakeholders in AG Mercantile. Vinod Goenka, co-owner of real estate firm DB Realty, is also a director of the company. Goenka is a co-business partner with Shahid Balwa one of the accused in 2G spectrum scam who is currently in CBI custody.

Documents submitted by AG Mercantile to the ministry of corporate affairs revealed that most investors in the company had given fraudulent information about their address and known source of income.

In fact five of the investors have given the same address. It is now being suspected that most investors might be bogus. Investigating authorities will now have to find out how deputy CM Pawar allotted land to his own company.

Interestingly, Pawar hasn’t mentioned that he owns 8,800 shares in his election affidavit. “This is a gross violation of the election code of conduct. It is mandatory for candidates to mention all movable and non-movable property details. But Pawar did not bother to do this,” pointed out party insider who said this scam would add to the liability of the already beleaguered NCP.

NCP supremo Sharad Pawar has always maintained that he did not have any relations with 2G spectrum accused Balwa. He has however admitted to family relations with Goenka. Political observers now wonder how this link between his nephew Ajit Pawar and Goenka will affect the Maratha satrap.
