A senior official working with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was picked up late on Thursday evening on the suspicion of murdering his wife. The woman used to work as an assistant manager with the Mumbai Airport’s Air Traffic Control (ATC).
Eknath Pai, 48, works as a manager with AAI in Mumbai. On March 16, Pai approached the Powai police station claiming that his wife Ajita, 45, was lying unconscious at their home and not responding to his calls.

The Powai police visited the home and after finding nothing amiss, they sent the body for the mandatory post mortem. Ajita’s body was subsequently handed over to Pai who wanted to cremate it at his native place in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. “But, after we received the post mortem report, it was found that Ajita had been strangulated to death and had not died a natural death as claimed by her husband,” said senior inspector Ashok Jadhav of Powai police station.

The Powai police then investigated the case in detail and kept a
track of Eknath through his friends and relatives as well as by tracing his cellphone.

“The couple has a daughter. When we tried to find out about Pai’s whereabouts, we got to know that he was still at his native place,” Jadhav added.

The Powai police then decided to lay a trap and Pai was arrested as soon as he arrived in Mumbai late Thursday evening.
Jadhav also said that it was possible that more than one person was involved in the murder. Further investigations are on.
